Helpful Reading Strategies
When your child is having difficulty reading an unknown word, here are some strategies to help them:
-check for picture clues
-stretch out the word slowly using your knowledge of letter sounds
-try the short vowel sound, then try to long vowel sound. Which one makes a word?
-look for little words inside bigger words (like "pen" in "pencil")
-if you are stuck on a word, skip it, read the rest of the sentence, then hop back.
-listen to see if the word makes sense in the sentence. If it does not, go back and try again!
